GLOBE has been recognized by global industry leaders Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) and Institut de L'Audiovisuel et des Telecommunications en Europe (IDATE) for its relentless efforts towards climate action and integrating sustainability in its network operations.

Globe was cited in the GSMA Mobile Net Zero State of the Industry on Climate Action 2023 report for carrying out a comprehensive climate-related financial analysis and scenario planning as part of its commitment to the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

The company was also named a Leading Sustainable Network Operator at the Green All-optical Network forum organized by IDATE at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Globe was recognized for its sustainability-driven network operations strategy.

"Globe has made a firm commitment towards sustainability, and we are proud to be recognized by GSMA and IDATE. Our focus on climate action is not only for the planet, but also for our customers who we continue to serve with high-quality digital tech solutions. Together with our stakeholders, we believe that we can continue to positively contribute to the environment,” said Globe Group chief sustainability and corporate communications officer Yoly Crisanto, who received the recognition in Barcelona.

Globe’s TCFD study took into consideration its high-value assets such as data centers, corporate offices, stores, and network facilities; geographical location; and facility-level carbon emissions. It used two climate change scenarios in its assessment aligned with the IPCC 5th Assessment Report: 1) business as usual with minimal global carbon emission reduction efforts (RCP 8.5) and 2) a more conscious effort across all sectors and governments aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 2°C pathway (RCP 4.5).

The assets were then assessed against climate-related physical risks and transition risks based on the global and local climate change trends. The assets were also assessed against opportunities derived from the opportunity list of the TCFD driven by the impact of climate change.

If not acted upon, climate-related risks can negatively impact the organization’s revenue and reputation, affecting the quality and continued delivery of services highly dependent on its network and IT infrastructure and a well-functioning workforce. On the other hand, climate-related opportunities provide avenues for cost savings, operational efficiency, and supply chain resilience.

Globe addresses its identified climate-related risks and opportunities by operationalizing its climate action roadmap. The company partnered with key industry experts on climate action. It onboarded South Pole to assist in crafting its science-based targets for 2030 and the roadmap to Net Zero by 2050. It also invested in sustainability software through DNV-Synergi Life to automate data collection of environmental, social, and governance metrics.

The company continues to explore alternative energy solutions such as solar hybrid generators and onsite solar panels for bad-grid and off-grid sites. It is also harnessing government programs on renewable energy utilization with a total of 24 facilities, including its corporate headquarters, running on clean energy.

Globe has also deployed over 9,000 green network solutions and utilizes intelligent monitoring systems to monitor and control onsite equipment remotely on a 24/7 basis and improve operational energy efficiency.

The company also engages business partners, vendors, suppliers, and customers through the Supplier Code of Ethics and sustainable criteria integration in its procurement process. This ensures that sustainable practices are adopted and promoted across the value chain.

Globe’s recent ecosystem expansion into climate tech shows how it looks to harness opportunities in the low carbon economy transition. The company aims to enable and support other sectors and industries in their climate action journey by developing more sustainable products and services.

The company’s recognition at the IDATE Digiworld event, where world-class players from the optical network industry gathered, and by the GSMA in its latest Mobile Net Zero report, is an affirmation of Globe’s climate action strategy and programs in action.

GSMA is an association of more than 750 mobile operators around the world, while IDATE DigiWorld is one of Europe’s ICT experts specializing in telecom, media, and internet markets.
