Director Lidasan shared the rationale and importance of community iftar

LAST April 3, 2023, I attended a community Iftar (breaking of fast) organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Davao Sub-delegation. It was well attended by community and religious leaders, Davao Madrasah Comprehensive Office, Muslim Community of the Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City Mayor’s Office, representatives from the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF). Consul General Deddy Faisal Bin Ahmad Salleh, and Consul Ahmadulkuddus Husain, Consulate General of Malaysia were also present and joined the Iftar and the prayer.

Community Iftar has been an essential part of Muslim culture for centuries. It's a tradition that brings people together, encourages socialization, and strengthens community relationships. During the event, I was given the opportunity to reconnect with the Muslim community of the city and discuss issues and concerns that the Ummah is facing today. I had the chance to listen to their stories, offer support from the university, and encourage one another to partner and collaborate for future programs and projects.

Fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims around the world fast from dawn till dusk during the month of Ramadhan. The month is a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, charity, and community building. One of the most important events during Ramadan is the Iftar. It takes place just after the call to the Maghrib (sunset) prayer.

During Iftar, dates were served on the table. This tradition follows the Sunnah (practice) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) where he broke his fast with dates and water. This practice has been followed by Muslims for centuries. Dates are rich in sugars, potassium, magnesium, and fiber. A simple food ideal to energize the body after a day of fasting.

Community Iftars may be held in mosques, community centers, and homes, and this tradition has been an integral part of Ramadhan for many years. It helps build a strong community because of many reasons. It helps build a sense of togetherness and unity amongst Muslims. It is also an opportunity for people from diverse backgrounds to come together and share a meal. It also creates a sense of belonging and helps to promote social cohesion. Lastly, it brings people close together by sharing their experiences, hardships, struggles, and happy moments.

Moreover, it also provides an opportunity for Muslims to strengthen their faith. Ramadhan is a month of spiritual reflection and piety. Breaking the fast with the community reminds Muslims of the importance of their faith, which they share with others. By being together, sharing a meal, and reciting prayers, Muslims are reminded of the essence of their religion. It’s a time of renewal, and through the Iftar, the community is re-energized.

This is one of the unique characteristics of Muslim communities in Davao City. Because of a vibrant and inclusive governance of the city government, the sense of Muslim identity, belongingness, and purpose are well observed and practiced.
