A NEW sea route connecting mainland Cebu to Camotes Islands is scheduled to start service on April 20, 2023.

A Super Shuttle roll-on, roll-off (Roro) ferry will leave the port in Liloan in the north for the town of Poro and return.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Paul Rodriguez, chief executive officer (CEO) of Asian Marine Transportation Corp., the owner of the Super Shuttle Ferry, and Eric Lim, CEO of Topline Group that operates the port in Liloan, had agreed to launch the new route to serve the growing number of people who want to visit the Camotes Islands, especially during the summer months.

Vallacar Transit, the operator of Ceres Liner, will also deploy buses that will board the Roro vessel for Poro.

Rodriguez is optimistic about the development and described it as a “win-win” for everyone as it will bring more prosperity to Camotes Islands.

Camotes has been dubbed as “the next Bantayan” because of its pristine beaches and countless resorts.

Anticipating the influx of visitors, the airport in the town of San Francisco is also being upgraded.

The governor saw the need for additional traffic between the mainland and Camotes Islands to give the public a choice.

At the moment, Jomalia Shipping Corporation dominates the Cebu-Camotes route from the port in Danao City to the port in Consuelo, San Francisco. (PAC / PJB)
