AS the Islamic Festival Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, the Indonesian Consulate General in Davao City celebrated an “Open House Eid al-Fitr” at the Consul General’s Residence on Friday, April 21.

Republic of Indonesia Consul General Achmad Djatmiko and Madame Yeni Djatmiko thanked the guests and representatives from different sectors and offices, including officials, honorary consuls and members of the diplomatic corps, university faculty members, media and Indonesian communities in Mindanao.

In a heartfelt welcoming speech, the Honorable Consul General said, “The world is facing multiple challenges: slow pandemic recovery, the war, and food and energy crises. On this day of celebration, let us not forget to extend our prayers and support to those who are struggling. May this occasion reminds us of the importance of compassion, unity and harmony among all people.”

“The message of Eid al-Fitr as a celebration of solidarity should be seen as an opportunity to showcase Islam as a blessing for the entire world. We must play our part in addressing the global challenges we face,” he continued.

“As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia values and promotes tolerance, moderation and pluralism, living alongside other religions and beliefs. I urged each of us gathered here today to take responsibility for promoting this message of solidarity and inclusivity.”

Consul General Djatmiko explained that they are celebrating Eid al-Fitr and promoting Indonesian cuisine and hospitality at the same time.

The guests helped themselves to traditional dishes prepared by Chef Yudha Pratama Putra, which included rendang beef, meatballs, pastries and the special “ketupat with oppor ayam” (rice cake with chicken in coconut milk soup), among others.

As part of the dedication to strengthen and foster good relations between the Philippines and Indonesia, he announced that there are plans to re-establish international flights between Davao and Manado, its sister city in North Sulawesi. There will also be participation in the 8th Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo from May 25-27 at the SMX Convention Center of SM Premier Davao.
