CONSTRUCTION of Talisay City's first-ever skate park and family park began on Thursday, April 20, 2023.

In an interview with SunStar Cebu on Wednesday, April 26, Talisay City Mayor Gerard Anthony "Samsam" Gullas stated that the project aims to offer a place for families and friends to spend time together.

He claimed that the area may serve as a skateboarders' training ground in the city.

Gullas led the ceremonial groundbreaking of the ‘all-in-one’ family park and skate park located beside the Plaza Talisay inside the City Hall compound last Thursday.

The mayor said the project’s construction, which will cost P60 and 80 million, will be completed by December 2023.

He added that the city government will only spend around P10 to 20 million for the project because the remaining amount will be shouldered by the national government and Cebu Provincial Government.

The initiative will open up more business opportunities for the Talisaynons.

The project will include a coffee shop, dining area and food stands.

Families from the neighboring areas and the Talisaynons themselves can do picnic, yoga and zumba dance in the park.

It is also a place where children can play.

Gullas claimed in a Facebook post that Cebuana skateboarding sensation Margielyn Didal has been his inspiration to put up a skate park since last year.

Gullas told SunStar Cebu that Didal brought pride into the country after winning a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games and representing the Philippines in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The city government wanted to invite Didal during the opening of the skate park.

Gullas said that with the upcoming skate park, skateboard enthusiasts will no longer practice on the streets and open public areas.

"We wanted to provide them a venue where they can practice their skills safely," he said.

The project’s design was created by world-renowned designer Kenneth Cobonpue, in coordination with Didal’s Olympics skateboarding coach Dani Bautista. (EHP, TPT)
