THE public must expect power disruptions after the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) found a system disturbance in the Visayas grid.

The NGCP, in a Facebook post on Thursday, April 27, 2023, announced that it is monitoring a system disturbance affecting the Visayas grid.

Grid status was red alert from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and yellow alert from 2 to 6 p.m., and 7 to 10 p.m.

Following NGCP’s announcement, Visayan Electric Company, through a statement sent by reputation enhancement head Quennie Bronce via text message, informed consumers in its franchise area that there is a “high possibility of implementing rotational brownouts.”

“Visayan Electric would like to inform its customers that there is a high possibility of implementing rotational brownouts in its franchise area due to the announcement of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) of a red alert status in the Visayas Grid,” Visayan Electric said.

Bronce said a red alert status indicates that the supply-demand balance in the grid has further deteriorated and signals the possibility of rotational brownouts.

Rotational brownouts are temporary outages that are implemented on a rotating basis to ensure that all customers in the franchise area are affected equally.

Yellow alerts, meanwhile, indicate that there is a power supply deficiency, and the demand for electricity is higher than the available supply.

“As long as NGCP says we are on red alert status, the possibility of brownouts/rotational brownouts is possible,” said Bronce.

The Visayan Electric urged its customers to conserve energy and to use the electricity wisely.
