A GRADUATE of the state-run Cebu Technological University (CTU) main campus earned a spot in the Top 10 list of passers of the April 2023 Civil Engineers Licensure Examination.

With an 89 percent rating, Cristine Magbago Remolisan from Carcar City placed eighth in the examinations. She is the only topnotcher from Cebu.

Remolisan told SunStar Cebu on Saturday, April 29, that failing to graduate with Latin honors in August last year motivated her to top the board exam.

She recalled the moment she told her mother that she would graduate without academic distinction. Her mother immediately claimed that she would become a topnotcher instead.

“That was what really pushed me, that it doesn’t matter that I was not decorated with honors so long as I became a topnotcher in the licensure examinations,” she said in Cebuano.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced on Saturday, April 29, that only 5,887 of the 16,936 examinees, or 34.76 percent, passed the exams held on April 23 and 24.

Remolisan shared that, unlike her friends, she did not mind and did not anticipate the release of the list of passers. But when she learned about the results, she said she was grateful for achieving such a feat.

She initially thought she would not survive four years of studying engineering, let alone pass the licensure examinations.

“We are really so happy. I really did not expect to pass (the licensure exam). I just told myself that I did not want to go through the process of reviewing for it again if I failed because it’s exhausting,” she said.

Remolisan said she plans to find a job soon so she can repay her parents for their hard work.

Alexis Castillo Alegado of Mariano Marcos State University shared the top spot with Garret Wilkenson Ching Sia from the De La Salle University in Manila with a 92.10 percent rating.

The De La Salle University is the top performing school with 97 passers out of 109 takers, or an 88.99 percent passing rate. The licensure exam was conducted by the Board of Civil Engineering in different locations in the country, including Cebu.

Other testing sites were in the National Capital Region and the cities of Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Koronadal, Legazpi, Lucena, Pagadian, Palawan, Pampanga, Rosales, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga.

The PRC has yet to announce the date and location of the oathtaking ceremony.
