PREHISPANIC Cebuano culture will be on display in different sites in Cebu City from May 8 to June 2, 2023, as the Casa Gorordo Museum unveils its newest attraction.

The “Unearthing Sugbo: Glimpses of Early Cebuano Society” is an outdoor exhibit featuring various installation art showcasing the historical value of the downtown area in Cebu City.

The exhibit is free and open to the public and is located at five sites in the downtown area including Casa Gorordo Museum, Fort San Pedro, Freedom Park, Plaza Independencia and Plaza Sugbo.

The areas were chosen because these were main archeological sites where artifacts, fossils and various archeological records were unearthed.

The outdoor historical display was created through the partnership of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi), which owns and manages the Casa Gorordo Museum; the University of San Carlos Museum; and the Cebu City Government.

The exhibit was personally curated by Dr. Jose Eleazar Bersales, archeologist and director of the USC Museum.

Rafi’s Director of Culture and Heritage Unit Florencio Moreno said the exhibit will let the public appreciate the historical value of the downtown area.

It will serve as a reminder of the history of pre-colonial Cebuanos through the archeological finds on display.

“What is important about this, is that it establishes that this area in Cebu really was a thriving community before that traded with other parts of Southeast Asia even before European contact. This is what we want to establish to the public.” Moreno said. (Ralph Martinez, BIPSU Intern)
