A consummate collection of passion and precision!

This is what we witnessed at “KOANTUM BALUD,” a wave and wood art exhibit by sculptor and artist Raymund L. Fernandez at the Qube Gallery Design Center-Cebu.

Fernandez, born in 1955, is a contemporary Bisaya Realism artist who immersed himself in wood carving. He was a former Fine Arts professor at the University of the Philippines Cebu. He taught Art History and Techniques.

He has also written “Martino Abellana and the Rise of Contemporary Bisaya Realism,” a chapter in the book “More Cebuano than You Think,” and still another book entitled “Kamingaw: An Impressionist Portrait of the Bisaya Painter Martino A. Abellana,” written alongside his wife, Estela Ocampo-Fernandez.

“I began when I found myself carving waves. Quickly, I realized I only had two options. Take a picture of a wave and carve that frozen moment, or understand what waves are in the sense of physics. I favored the second option. My work in carving always starts with wood. A knowledge of how waves behave would help. So I researched and found out: Everything is waves,” said artist Fernandez.

Feast your senses on these passionate pieces, as did a cross section of the city’s art connoisseurs, who not only gushed over them but also gave wishes for many more years to Raymond on his birthday!

Hurry, the show ends on May 20, Saturday!
