Aetas benefit from DOST potable water project

PORAC — Aeta communities in Sapang Uwak will soon reap the benefits of safe potable water through a hydraulic ram pump “hydram” with the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

DOST- Pampanga Provincial S&T Director Mary Michelle Quiambao led the turnover of the “hydram” project to the municipal government of Porac led by Mayor Jaime “Jing” Capil.

“Hydram” pump is a device that utilizes gravity and the energy from flowing water such as a spring, stream, or river to pump water to a height above its source.

The mechanism that pushes an average water discharge of 22 liters per minute and a multi-media filtration system that uses activated carbon, pebbles, coarse sand, and fine sand.

Capil said the project is a great help to the indigenous community of Sapang Uwak.

The mayor said the residents will now have access to clean potable water.

In 2021, the DOST Region III and the Don Honorio Ventura State University (DHVSU) installed a hydram pump in the Sitio Camachile in Nabuclod in Floridablanca town which is home to 251 families or roughly 1,000 individuals, mostly Aetas.

The DOST also turned over computer tablets for the town’s disaster response using applications developed by the agency.

The gadgets will be used in response efforts during or after landslides, earthquakes and other disasters.
