CL among regions with high dengue cases -- DOH

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO---The recent Disease Surveillance Report of the Department of Health (DOH) released on weekend showed that Central Luzon is among the top three regions in the country with the highest number of dengue cases.

The DOH report revealed that Central Luzon recorded 4,026 cases, next to Calabarzon with 4,252, which followed the National Capital Region that logged the highest number with 5,552 for the period January 1 to April 29, 2023.

The report added that the highest increase compared to the same period last year were Mimaropa--(533 to 2,602 or 388 percent increment; Soccsksargen--1,020 to 3,069 or 201 percent increment; and National Capital Region--2,493 to 5,552 or 123 percent increment.

On a nation-wide scale, a total of 39,947 cases of dengue have been reported by DOH regional offices for the same four-month period, which is 43 percent higher than the 27,928 recorded last year.

The DOH report however noted that there were fewer dengue deaths in the past four months with 127 or a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.32 percent, compared to last year's 166 fatalities or a 0.59 percent CFR.

Dengue is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitos which lay their eggs on stagnant water and usually bite during the day.

The DOH continues to remind the public against the threat of dengue and practice the 4S (Search and destroy mosquito breeding places; Seek early consultation from health experts; Secure self-protection; and Support fogging/spraying) and observe cleanliness of surroundings to destroy mosquito-breeding sites.
