Breaking barriers: Visually impaired graduate's victory in teacher licensure exam inspires all

In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, a graduate in Cebu defied the odds and emerged triumphant despite her disability in one of the hardest exams in the country.

1. Overcoming limitations

Cyril Blanco Bergado, a visually impaired graduate from Cebu Normal University (CNU), defies expectations by passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

Among the 85,717 successful LET takers announced by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) on May 19, 2023, Bergado stands out for her remarkable achievement.

2. Determination and accommodations

Despite the absence of a Braille-printed exam, Bergado relied on assistance from a designated PRC staff member who read the questions aloud and shaded the answer sheets while she dictated her responses.

To ensure the validity of her exam, the entire process was videotaped, and both the recording and her answered papers were sent to the PRC central office in Manila.

3. Triumph over adversity

Bergado's journey began when she developed open-angle glaucoma, resulting in progressive optic neuropathy and eventually leading to total blindness in 2011.

Despite the challenges, she courageously resumed her education with the support of her brother and completed high school.

4. Family sacrifices and gratitude

Bergado expresses deep gratitude to her family, particularly her parents, for their unwavering support and sacrifices that allowed her to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.

She acknowledges that her achievement is not solely her own but a testament to the love and encouragement she received from her parents.

5. Inspiring others and future plans

Bergado hopes her story will inspire others, especially individuals with disabilities, to focus on possibilities rather than limitations.

Drawing from her personal experience, she aspires to teach children with visual impairments and contribute to their education and well-being.

Despite facing numerous challenges, Bergado's remarkable achievement serves as a powerful testament to the indomitable human spirit and stands as an inspiration to all those striving to overcome adversity and pursue their dreams. (KFJ)
