THE Provincial Government of Negros Occidental and the Department of Agriculture Region 6 turned over the Muscovado Production and Marketing Enterprise Facility worth almost P26 million in Barangay Oringao, Kabankalan City Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
The project is jointly funded by the loan proceeds from World Bank, DA under the Philippine Rural Development Project, the provincial government, and Kalibutan Society Inc. (KSI), as the proponent group.
The infrastructure component of the plant is worth P12,176,549 while the enterprise component amounts to P13,801,177.
“By investing in the production and marketing of muscovado, we are not only preserving a time-honored tradition but also seizing the opportunity to create economic growth and sustainable livelihoods for our community,” said Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson during the turnover last June 1.
The project was proposed bolster the production of quality muscovado in the province for export and domestic market. The new facility also provides livelihood opportunities.
Lacson said the new building stands as a testament to the province’s commitment to excellence and innovation, and it is a hub where farmers can refine their craft, where modern technologies can be embraced to enhance productivity, and where the legacy of muscovado production can be passed down to future generations.
Distinguished by its deep brown color, muscovado is an unrefined cane sugar that contains more molasses giving the artisanal sweetener a richer flavor.
The governor led the inauguration of the facility with Board Member Jeffrey Tubola, Kabankalan Mayor Benjie Miranda, and DA-6 OIC Regional Executive Director Engr. Jose Albert Barrogo,
“The importance of this endeavor extends beyond the economic benefits. It also serves as a catalyst for social empowerment and community development,” he added.
Himamaylan Mayor Raymundo Tongson Jr., Oringao Punong Barangay Wenifredo Penuela, KSI President Antonio Castillo, Jr., and City Agriculturist Ricky Muscosa also joined the opening, among others.
