Cebu has become a thriving hub for motorcycle enthusiasts, and this ever-growing community of two-wheeled riders expands beyond mere passion.

Cebuano riders celebrated the eighth year of “The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride” on May 21, 2023. This is a global movement that converges retro elegance and engines, all fueled with a resolute mission: Promote men’s health to the forefront.

Founded by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia, in 2012, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) quickly became a global sensation. This is not an ordinary motorcade but a themed one which focuses on classic- and vintage-styled motorcycles. The event gained immense popularity across the world and was adopted by the Filipino community of riders as well.

In the Philippines, the event made its debut in Manila in 2014, followed by the establishment of a chapter in Cebu in 2015. Andrew Ford U. Guardo, The DGR admin in Cebu and Tabo Klasiko organizer, mentioned how they started with a modest group of 40-plus members, before increasing to an impressive 350 participants this year.

“The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is an incredibly worthwhile cause, and we are committed to broadening our network of enthusiastic participants. Funds raised by The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride are invested into prostate cancer and men’s mental health initiatives around the world through our official charity partner, Movember. Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale,” said Guardo.

Community

In the heart of Cebu, the crescendo of engines and elegance intertwine just the same. Riders don dapper suits, becoming the event’s iconic identity. The event also presents a refined and gentlemanly image, contrasting the rugged and rebellious stereotype of motorcyclists. Indeed, a noble cause warrants a noble approach that uplifts the perception of motorcycling.

“The community of classic and custom motorcycle enthusiasts in Cebu is rapidly expanding. In order to bring them together before The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, we organized a pre-event that generates excitement and prepares them for the main event. These gatherings provide a fantastic opportunity for enthusiasts to connect, celebrate their shared passion, and make the overall experience even more memorable,” said Guardo.

The group organized Tabo Klasiko in Cebu as a prelude to the main event. This innovative gathering served as a market day where like-minded individuals come together and share their passion surrounding the world of motorcycles.

“Attendees have the exhilarating opportunity to engage in trading and discovering unique motorcycle-related merchandise. This interactive element adds an extra level of excitement and engagement, making our event an absolute must-visit for motorcycle enthusiasts and those seeking an immersive experience,” said Guardo.

Riders were treated to an array of mouthwatering food and refreshing drinks at Tabo Klasiko held at Cafe Racer in Mandaue City, Cebu on May 20. Organizers also provided a range of services including a barbershop and tattoo areas. To even ramp up the energy, organizers also invited a talented lineup of DJs, including Nyor Plandox, Bay Henz, Unik and Nilo.

“For Tabo Klasiko, we collaborated with esteemed managers and owners of known motorcycle brands such as Earl Villamala of Motor Ace Philippines, Hazel Fernando of Motology, Andrei Ursal of Drei Bikes Trading and Bebz Garcia of Holeshot. With them, it makes the event truly exceptional for its second year,” said Guardo.

With eight years of active participation in The DGR Cebu, Guardo mentioned that the event has undergone a remarkable evolution. The route has gradually been extended by the organizers to accommodate the growing number of riders joining each year, and corrective measures were done to address temporary road congestion and navigation challenges.

Safety remained a top priority for Guardo and the organizers. As staunch advocates for health, they took measures to ensure participants adhered to a safe and regular speed during the event. By prioritizing responsible riding, they aimed to create a secure environment for all involved.

“The experience of cruising on the road at a leisurely speed, adhering to a minimum limit of 30-40 kph, while witnessing the orderly line of riders is truly mesmerizing. The camaraderie among participants is what I cherish the most. It’s heartwarming to see riders lending a helping hand when someone faces a motorcycle breakdown, ensuring that they can quickly get back on track and continue the ride together,” said Guardo.

The DGR Cebu organizers expressed their gratitude for the ongoing support of an incredibly generous individual who wishes to remain anonymous. Since the event’s inception in 2015, this individual has played a pivotal role in their journey, and the person’s contributions have been vital to the event’s success. Guardo further highlighted that Café Racer Diner Mandaue, tucked away in the North Reclamation Area, holds a special significance as the birthplace of The DGR in Cebu.

The DGR on May 21 saw a magnificent coalition of diverse motor groups converging, each wearing retro-inspired styles. Together, these dapper riders rally behind a relentless drive for change—that beneath their suave attire is a powerful message on their sleeves, and that is to make a positive difference in the lives of men.
