NEGROS Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said they may recommend to commercial hog users in the province to acquire African swine fever vaccines.

Lacson made the statement as the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) revealed the 100 percent success of the field trial of the ASF vaccine.

"If it is already made available in the market, I will also encourage the commercial farms to also buy the vaccines," Lacson said.

Dr. Jonic Natividad, regulatory chief of the Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas, said they are hopeful that the national government will subsidize the vaccines for backyard hog raisers if it's made available in the market.

"If it is given free by the national government it would be better for the farmers. I believe the national government can afford to provide it for free," Natividad said.

Natividad appealed to hog raisers to strictly observe biosecurity in their farms.

"We call on their cooperation and vigilance. Report immediately if they have hog deaths," he said.

He also revealed that based on the results of blood samples, only one case of ASF was confirmed in the province, which is in Pulupandan.

He said some of the samples taken by the province are directly sent to their central office in Manila.*
