A 58-YEAR-OLD fisherman who hacked a dog fractured his left arm after being mauled by two persons who rescued the animal out of compassion.

The incident occurred in Isla Verde, Barangay Bolinawan, Carcar City, southern Cebu at 5:55 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2023.

Both Christian Caballero, a student, 20, and his father, Rodrigo Daal, 62, a tricycle driver, were taken into custody.

The victim, Joaquin Cuico, fractured his left arm.

Police Staff Sergeant Marjon Aledon and Patrolman Louie Laña of Carcar City Police Station arrived at the scene after being informed by barangay captain Michelle Gador about the incident.

Rodrigo told SunStar Cebu that he rescued the dog named “Bakang” after it was hacked by Cuico, who was reportedly drunk.

According to Rodrigo, Bakang was tied inside the compound of his brother-in-law’s home and was being cared for by Cuico's wife while the home's owner was away in Manila.

"Hubog ni siya (biktima) nagdalag pinuti iyang gitripingan si Bakang. Luoy kaayo si Bakang kay daghang samad sa buko-buko," Rodrigo said.

(The victim was drunk, carrying a knife and was “tripping” on Bakang. I feel awful for Bakang because he has so many injuries to his back.)

Rodrigo said he reprimanded the victim but the latter became enraged and threw a stone at him, knocking him to the ground.

He said that when Cuico approached and tried to attack him with a bolo, his son Christian came to his aid and struck the victim with a piece of wood.

The father and son were arrested, while the victim was rushed to the Carcar Provincial Hospital.

Rodrigo said Cuico behaves differently every time he gets drunk.

He added that Cuico’s wife would even run away out of concern for her safety. (GPL/TPT)
