THE Cebu Provincial Government will take over the operation of Kawasan Falls in Badian town to further develop and popularize the well-known tourist destination in southwest Cebu.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said they will start tearing down abandoned structures that were damaged by typhoon Odette in 2021 and other objects that pose risk to visitors and swimmers.

Garcia said the support of the provincial government is needed not only to destroy the structures but also to regulate any canyoneering activities at the Kawasan Falls in Barangay Matutinao, according to Sugbo News, Capitol’s online news portal.

“We have to clear that. So that we will really be able to see the full splendor of Kawasan Falls without these eye sores, so we would be clearing that," Garcia revealed.

Accordingly, adjustments are anticipated, particularly in the policies that will be put in place, such as the introduction of standard rates.

“[The provincial government also seeks to] allow tourism stakeholders in Badian to properly organize, and adopt a unified treatment of the canyoneering guests,” Garcia told Sugbo News.

On June 2, Garcia issued Executive Order (EO) No. 14 to temporarily stop the canyoneering and other tourist activities in Kawasan Falls while the demolition work was being done.

Prior to issuing the order, Garcia gave the municipal and barangay officials notice.

“I don't want a black mark on Cebu's tourism particularly on Kawasan Falls. So, rather than allow that disaster to happen, we might as well take preemptive action that's why I had to issue that EO,” the governor stated. (ANV, TPT)
