TABUELAN town is planning to build a “taboan” or farmer’s market in its town center in Barangay Poblacion.

Mayor Raul Gerona said in his speech during the opening salvo of the Suroy Suroy Sugbo Explore Midwest on June 10, 2023, that after completing the local food court, the town is now saving up to build the taboan.

“The financial aid and incentives that Governor (Gwendolyn) Garcia has provided us amounting to P2 to P3 million, we saved it up. Now our food court, the next project would be the farmer’s market,” said the mayor.

In a subsequent interview with SunStar Cebu, Gerona expounded that the town will maximize these incentives and budgets the Capitol is providing the town to fund public projects.

It can be remembered that the Capitol provided a P2 million incentive to local government units (LGU) that had completed and attended provincial development meetings in April 2023.

Although he did not disclose how much they expect to spend on the taboan, he said once the town has saved up enough for the farmer’s market, they will immediately start the project.

“This will really depend on the availability of funds. We will save up for it,” the mayor said in Cebuano.

The taboan is expected to cater to 2,000 farmers without collecting any fees.

Gerona said the current Tabuelan Public Market cannot cater to all stall owners and farmers.

Farmers trying to sell their harvested crops often have to set up their goods along the streets.

“We don’t want our farmers to sell on the streets. We want to give them dignity,” said Gerona.

The taboan will be built beside the police station in front of the Tabuelan Bus Terminal, bringing the farmers closer to the consumers. (DCL)
