SCHOOLS should maintain modest and meaningful End-of-School-Year (EOSY) Rites and avoid “extravagant” ceremonies, according to the Department of Education in Davao Region (DepEd-Davao).

Jenielito Atillo, spokesperson of DepEd-Davao, said on June 16 that the EOSY Rites should be pursuant to DepEd Department Order No. 009-2023 “An order updating the multi-year implementing guidelines on the conduct of the K to 12 Basic Education Program EOSY Rites.”

One of its policies includes “discouraging excessive spending, extravagant attire, or extraordinary venue for the conduct of Graduation and Moving Up ceremonies.”

“Kinahanglan nakatutok siya sa kung unsa ba gyod ang tumong sa pagpahiluna sa activity. Kinahanglan ang sanctity sa aktibidad, dili siya mahanaw. Dili siya dapat himoon commercialized or extravagant (It should focus on the real purpose of conducting the activity. The sanctity of the ceremony should be maintained and not commercialized),” Atillo said during an interview with the Davao City Disaster Radio.

“Wala’y extravagant attire na mag gown, or extraordinary venue like didto ninyo himuon sa resort or swimming pool (There should be no extravagant attires like gowns or extraordinary venues like resorts and swimming pools). Bawal kaayo na (That’s not allowed) because we would like to ensure the safety of our children,” he added.

Also, Atillo said school uniforms are acceptable attire for students during EOSY Rites. He said the school administration and the parents should coordinate if they want to allow students to wear togas or other attires for the ceremony.

“Kung asa tong simple, mao to ang pinakamaayo (As long as it’s simple, the better). (But) dapat pareha ang suot. Kung gusto mag toga, mag sabot sila (But the attire should be uniformed and if they want ot wear togas, they should coordinate with the school),” Atillo said.

The last day of classes for public schools is set next month, July 7 followed by the EOSY Rites scheduled anytime between July 10 to 14.

Grade 6 and senior high school students will conduct their graduation while Kindergarten and Grade 10 students will have their Moving Up or Completion ceremonies. ICM
