THE Davao City Council passed on the third and final reading an ordinance increasing cash incentives for athletes who brought honor to Davao City.

This is after the Council increased the cash incentives for athletes and coaches who had won in regional sports competitions in team categories of five members or more to P12,000 for silver, and P10,000 for bronze medalists.

Originally, Section 9 of the ordinance states P15,000 awaits for gold medalists, P8,000 for silver and P5,000 for bronze for teams with five members or more.

The council also approved the inclusion of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) among the government agencies that can sanction or acknowledge a sports event for the incentive program of this Ordinance, along with the Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission, which was “inadvertently missed” in the ordinance.

During a previous interview, Davao City Councilor Jaffar Marohomsalic, chairperson of the committee on youth and sports, said the ordinance is a way for the city government of Davao to thank them for bringing honor in representing Davao City and Dabawenyos as well.

The city ordinance was originally approved by the council on November 22, 2022, however, the Davao City Budget Office had called the attention of the Committee on Youth and Sports an error in the amount of incentives stated in Section 9 of the ordinance, particularly on the table pertaining to Regional Competition under Team Category of five members or more.

The ordinance does not conform to the Local Finance Committee's (LFC’s) Resolution No. 2019-027 Matrix, which was the basis of the ordinance.

With this, two committee hearings were held before the final approval on June 27. ICE
