OVER 100 boats joined the fluvial procession of Senior San Juan Bautista in Sagay City in celebration of the Feast of San Juan in Purok Bougainvillea, Brgy Old Sagay on Saturday, June 24.

The Baloco family started the tradition 50 years ago and still continues to lead the organizing and fundraising for the event in Purok Bougainvillea, Sagay's emerging tourism destination.

The fluvial procession was a symbol of community and fisherfolk's prayer for good bounty from the sea.

Devotees prayed to the rosary while riding the boats from Purok Roma in Brgy. Taba-ao to the "bocana", where the river and the sea meet, in Purok Bougainvillea.

Fishing boats were decorated with flowers steamed with incense as part of their ritual to pray for good catch and safety.

Festival beach goers will have to endure the dousing of sea water or plain water as they enter the village.

It is said to symbolize as cleansing, starting anew and to purify one’s soul while others said it has healing benefits.

A mass led by Rev. Fr. Albert Aldea and the baptism of children were also held during the day.

Barangay Old Sagay council, Philippine Coast Guard- Sagay Command, Sagay Marine Reserve- Bantay Dagat and City DRRMO Rescue Volunteers helped to ensure a safe and orderly fluvial parade. (PR)
