THE University of Mindanao (UM) placed 7th in the survey conducted by JobStreet in May 2023 on schools preferred by employers in the Philippines.

Among all the schools in Mindanao, UM was the only educational institution to make it to the list.

UM is one of the largest private, non-sectarian universities in Mindanao and is known for being the home of the topnotchers with their graduates topping the licensure examination for Teachers, Criminology, and Civil Engineering.

“We are happy to be in the top 10 and the only one in Mindanao, we will continue to offer programs and services aimed at making our graduates employable by the industry,” said Reynaldo Castro, Vice President for External Relations and International Affairs Office.

Founded on July 27, 1946, UM caters to more or less 40,000 students in Mindanao. It has branches spread over its campuses: UM-Bansalan, UM-Digos, UM-Panabo, UM-Penaplata, and UM-Tagum.

In May, about 700 businesses from 42 different industries participated in the study which produced the top 10 list.

Within the list the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) ranked first with 23.39 percent followed by the University of the Philippines (UP) with 9.17 percent; on the third spot, De La Salle University (DLSU) with 6.88 percent; 4th Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas (UST) with 5.28 percent; 5th Mapua Institute of Technology with 3.44 percent; 6th Batangas State University with 3.21 percent; 7th University of Mindanao (UM) with 2.29 percent; and tied at the 8th spot are University of Cebu, Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), and Systems Technology Institute (STI) with 2.06 percent.

Apart from the preferred hiring list, hireability in terms of information technology, HR management, call center or business process outsourcing (BPO), manufacturing, construction, and wholesale trading is also included in the survey.

Aside from being ranked 7th in terms of hireability, UM ranked third in the preferability of employers in terms of human research management.

“Our ranking in human resource management is also a manifestation of our center of excellence (COE) in business administration, one of three COEs in the country for this program. We also have a strong partnership with the industry in this area which is probably the reason for our good performance in the ranking,” Castro said.
