Bacolod council asks DICT to install free wifi in 61 barangays

THE Bacolod City Council has approved a resolution requesting the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) the installation of free wifi in 61 barangays in the city.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Lady Gles Pallen, was approved during the regular session of the City Council on Wednesday, July 5.

Pallen said the national government through the DICT is undertaking free wifi internet access in public places across the Philippines to accelerate economic, social, and education opportunities.

“It has been observed that most of our constituents are reliant on the use of the internet, especially in communicating, studying, and being updated with the current happenings not just around the city but around the world,” she said.

She added that the internet has been the most useful technology in modern times given the enormous amount of information it can provide and it can send, which is being adopted by most private and public offices for it can ease and finish loads of work in the shortest period of time.

Pallen noted that Republic Act 10929 or the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act which aims to provide free access to internet service in public places throughout the country to promote knowledge-building among citizens and enable them to participate and compete in the evolving information and communication age.

“Wireless connection is very convenient to the public nowadays, considering that it will allow them to communicate and connect to the internet anywhere without the hassle of using cables and other broadband,” Pallen said.

She said it is the policy of the City of Bacolod to fully support, cooperate and commit itself to the implementation and success of national programs in as much as the same are intended to achieve development goals that will eventually benefit the people in the barangay particular.

She added that the City Government of Bacolod, as its way of enhancing its information and communication technology competency, aims to provide ways for its constituents to have free and accessible wireless internet connection, particularly in 61 barangays of the city.*
