PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has suspended classes and work in government schools and offices in the National Capital Region (NCR) for Monday, July 24, 2023.

In a memorandum circular dated July 21, the Malacañang cited Typhoon Egay as well as the three-day transport strike in the Metro as the reason for the suspension of classes in public schools and work in government offices.

“In view of the forecasted inclement weather brought about by Typhoon ‘Egay’ and the scheduled seventy-two (72)-hour transport strike in Metro Manila, work in government offices and classes in public schools at all levels in the National Capital Region are hereby suspended on 24 July 2023,” the memorandum circular stated.

Government agencies that are involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services.

Private companies and private schools were given the discretion to decide whether to suspend or not their operations.

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also lifted the expanded number coding scheme for July 24.

Marcos will deliver his second State of the Nation Address (Sona) at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City on July 24.

Transport group Manibela said 200,000 of their members will join the transport strike which will be held from July 24 to 26.

The strike aims to air the group's sentiment on the government’s alleged preferential treatment in awarding the routes to public utility vehicles in line with the Omnibus Franchising Guidelines or the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program framework. (SunStar Philippines)
