8 arrested for alleged illegal fishing in Dalaguete town

AT LEAST eight fishermen were detained by the police, along with their catch at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, in Barangay Coro, Dalaguete town, southern Cebu, for alleged illegal fishing activity.

Those arrested were Boy Beldad, 45, and Tunton Fajardo, 31, as well as Edwin Cañete, 24, Jayson Montemayor, 24, Lolito Patatag, 36, Valentine Cabaleda, 40, and Julius Cañete, 35, all of whom reside in the municipality's Barangay Tapon.

The fishermen, according to Dalaguete Police Station Senior Master Sergeant Jack Joseph Fajardo, violated a municipal ordinance that prohibits the use of fish nets with tiny openings.

Additionally, the fishermen lacked a fishing permit.

Police Major Clemente Ceralde Jr., chief of Dalaguete Police Station, said they conducted a routine seaborne patrol, along with the members of Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (Menro) led by Menro chief Philip Calisang, when they came across the suspects.

The yielded a steel container (banyera) filled with different kinds of fish. (GPL, TPT).
