At least 10 barangays in Bacolod City were affected by floods due to heavy rains triggered by southwest monsoon or habagat enhanced by typhoon Goring on Monday, August 28.

Dr. Anna Maria Laarni Pornan, head of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), said Monday that the rains caused floods in some areas of Barangays 36, 40, Felisa, Alijis, Mansilingan, Taculing, Tangub, Pahanocoy, Sum-ag, and Singcang-Airport.

She said they evacuated 1,304 families composed of at least 4,633 individuals, adding that some of them were evacuated to various evacuation centers in Bacolod City.

Pornan noted that the affected families were evacuated with the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine Red Cross, Bacolod Chamber volunteer group, among others.

Pornan said heavy rains started on Sunday evening, August 27, with a yellow rainfall warning and an orange rainfall warning on Monday morning.

She said that at least three rivers in Bacolod City overflowed which affected the residents.

She added the floodwaters also subsided after a few hours and the affected residents also returned to their homes.

Pornan disclosed that the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) also provided food assistance to the affected families.*
