2 dead due to twin-typhoons enhancing 'habagat'

TWO individuals were reported killed due to the effects of southwest monsoon enhanced by typhoons Goring and Hannah, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Sunday, September 3, 2023.

In a situational report, the NDRRMC said the fatalities were from Western Visayas and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

It said a person is also reported missing while another is injured.

The disaster bureau said a total of 114,724 families or 418,192 individuals were affected by the twin weather disturbances in 1,496 barangays in the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Cordilleras, and National Capital Region (NCR).

The government through the local government units has so far provided a total of P20,901,428.11 worth of relief items to the affected individuals.

It said a total of 96 houses in Ilocos region, Cagayan, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and Cordilleras were totally damaged due to the typhoons.

Damage to infrastructure was pegged to over P130.2 million while more than P421 million to the agriculture sector.

The NDRRMC said 25 roads and nine bridges were currently not passable due to either damage, flooding or fallen debris.

The municipalities of Pototan in Iloilo and Sibalom in Antique were placed under a state of calamity due to the onslaught of the typhoons.

Typhoon Goring has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday.

Hanna is expected to emerge over the Taiwan strait and may exit PAR by Sunday evening or on Monday morning, September 4.

The enhanced Southwest Monsoon will continue to bring gusty conditions over Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Zambales, Pampanga, Bataan, Batanes, Benguet, Apayao, Aurora, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Cavite, Lubang Island, Romblon Kalayaan Island and the northern portion of Eastern Visayas until Tuesday.(SunStar Philippines)
