'Hanna' exits PAR but continuously enhances habagat

TYPHOON Hanna (Haikui) has exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) but it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon (habagat) that is affecting some areas in the country, the state weather bureau said on Monday, September 4, 2023.

As of 10 a.m., Hanna was spotted at 360 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, gusts of up to 165 km/h, and central pressure of 975 hPa. It was moving north northwestward at 15 km/h.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the Hannah-enhanced southwest monsoon will continue to bring occasional to monsoon rains over the western portion of Luzon in the next three days, particularly Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, the southern portion of Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Occidental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian, Kalayaan and Cuyo Islands, and most of Calabarzon, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in a report that the agricultural damage incurred due to the onslaught of Typhoons Goring and Hanna went up to more than P584 million.

The damage to infrastructure stood at P130,251,200 million.

Among the areas affected by the weather systems were the Ilocos Region, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

The NDRRMC said a total of 140,101 families or 514,153 persons in 1,756 barangays were affected by the bad weather.

It said two persons were reported killed, while one is missing and another one is injured.

The government has provided a total of P33,675,507.48 worth of assistance to the affected population.

The towns of Pototan and Leganes in Iloilo, Sibalom in Antique and San Enrique in Negros Occidental were placed under state of calamity due to the damage they had incurred. (SunStar Philippines)
