LGU orients high schoolers on Safe Spaces Act

The Local Government of San Carlos City oriented at least 45 junior and senior high school students on Republic Act No. 11313 or the Safe Space Act, September 1, at Consuelo Alger Community Center, Brgy. Rizal.

The participants are from the Colegio de Sto. Tomas-Recoletos, Colegio de Sta. Rita de San Carlos, Julio Ledesma National High School and Tañon College participated in said event facilitated by the Orange Team, composed of the General Services Department, Public Market and Slaughterhouse Department, City Health Office, and City Waterworks Dept.

Atty. Gamaliel Nardo of the Public Attorney's Office, one of the resource persons shared that the law aimed at disciplining anyone to stop from whistling, shouting, or giving comment of sexual nature to women usually in public spaces like alleys, roads, sidewalks, and parks or buildings, schools, churches, restaurants, malls, public utility vehicles, etc.

Atty. Nardo also discussed Section 2 of R.A. 11313, which states the values and dignity of every human person, guarantees full respect for human life, recognizes the role of women in nation-building, and ensures fundamental equality before the law of women and men.

He said crimes of gender-based streets and public spaces sexual harassment also include leering and intrusive gazing, taunting, cursing, unwanted invitations, public masturbation, flashing of private parts, groping, and stalking, among others.
