2 quakes rock Davao City

(UPDATED) TWO consecutive earthquakes struck Davao City on Wednesday afternoon, September 6.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) earlier reported that the earthquake recorded at exactly 3:51 p.m. was at 4.7 magnitude-strong.

However, in its updated advisory, it was upgraded to 4.8

The tectonic quake had a depth of 1 kilometer.

According to Phivolcs’ Earthquake Information No.2 the earthquake was also felt in neighboring cities, towns, and provinces.

Reported Intensities:

Intensity IV - Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; Davao City; Kidapawan City, and Magpet, Cotabato

Intensity III - Bansalan, Digos City, Magsaysay, and Matanao, Davao del Sur; Antipas, Arakan, Matalam, and President Roxas, Cotabato

Intensity II - Hagonoy, Kiblawan, Malalag, Padada, and Sulop, Davao del Sur; Banisilan, Kabacan, Libungan, M'lang, and Makilala, Cotabato

Intensity I - Cagayan de Oro City; Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, Malita, Santa Maria, and Balut Island (Municipality of Sarangani), Davao Occidental

Instrumental Intensity:

Intensity IV - Davao City; Kidapawan City, Cotabato

Earlier, the city also felt Intensity 3 of the quake following a magnitude 3.5 earthquake that hit Magpet in Cotabato at 3:02 p.m. However, it was upgraded to magnitude 4.0.

Instrumental Intensities:

Intensity III - Davao City; Kidapawan City, Cotabato

Intensity I - Magpet, Cotabato

The reported intensity was based on reports of people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Office of the Civil Defense Davao Region (OCD-Davao) Chief for Operations Franz Irag reported that 41 individuals fainted while 13 houses were partially damaged due to the strong quake.

This is according to the partial update provided by the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as of 8 p.m. RGL
