M6.3 quake hits Calayan, injures 5 people

AT LEAST five individuals were injured when a wall collapsed following a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck off Dalupiri Island in Calayan, Cagayan Tuesday evening, September 12, 2023.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported Wednesday, September 13, that three of the five victims sustained minor injuries, while the two others suffered brain trauma and head concussion.

Two of the victims were minors, said the local government of Cagayan on Tuesday, adding that the affected residents in Calayan have moved to an evacuation center for safety.

No deaths or major damage to infrastructure have been reported, said the OCD.

Classes in all levels in Calayan town, though, were suspended Wednesday as inspection of school buildings has been ongoing.

The OCD assured that the affected residents will be given assistance, adding that search and rescue teams are on standby.

The quake struck 22 kilometers northeast of Dalupiri Island at 7:03 p.m. Tuesday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in an advisory.

The tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 41 kilometers.

It was felt at Intensity 5 in Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Laoag City, Pagudpud, Paoay, Pasuquin, and San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte.

Intensity 4 was reported in Luna, Apayao; Batac City, Batac, Currimao, and Pinili in Ilocos Norte; and Claveria, Enrile, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, and Santa Praxedes in Cagayan.

Intensity 3 was reported in Bucay, Lacub, Lagayan, and San Juan in Abra; Banayoyo, Bantay, Burgos, Caoayan, San Emilio, San Esteban, San Ildefonso, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Sigay, and Vigan City in Ilocos Sur; Solana, Cagayan; and Santo Domingo in Nueva Ecija.

Phivolcs said the quake was also felt at Intensity 2 in Dolores, La Paz, Luba, Pidigan, and Tubo in Abra; Narvacan, Santa, and Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur; and Aparri, Cagayan, while Intensity 1 was reported in San Isidro, Abra; Candon City and Tagudin in Ilocos Sur; and Camalaniugan, Lal-Lo, and Santa Ana in Cagayan.

The following Instrumental Intensities were also recorded:

Intensity 4 -- Laoag City and Pasuquin in Ilocos Norte; and Aparri and Gonzaga in Cagayan

Intensity 3 -- Sinait and Vigan City in Ilocos Sur; and Peñablanca in Cagayan

Intensity 2 -- Ilagan City in Isabela

Intensity 1 -- Candon City, Narvacan, and Tagudin in Ilocos Sur; Camalaniugan in Cagayan; and Baler and Casiguran in Aurora.
