THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through its Malikhaing Pinoy Program, revealed the top eight Philippine creative products and industries that contribute to the high potential growth of the country’s economy.
These services are game development, animation, furniture design, music, advertising, fashion design, film, and visual arts.
In a presentation of the Malikhaing Pinoy Program presented by DTI Undersecretary Rafaelita M. Aldaba, Competitiveness and Innovation Group (CIG), the official emphasized that the program for creatives increases the economic and deployment contribution of the Philippine Creative Industries to support economic recovery.
The agency’s minute-long presentation was shown during the grand launching of FiestaKucha Kadayawan 2023: Mugna!, the 1st Davao Region Creative Innovation Summit on September 26, 2023, at the Philippine Women’s College, Davao City.
“The creative industries are an important engine of growth. The creatives can act as catalysts for creative disruption and innovation to drive and fuel economic recovery and sustainable, resilient, and inclusive growth” Aldaba said during her talk.
The official also highlighted the strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats of our creatives that should be noted. She further elaborated that the edge is the given creativity and talents of the Filipinos; technology; social media; growing market; culture and arts; employment; positive and spillover effects; content innovation in IP; community-oriented; and global presence.
On the other hand, she emphasized the possible and visible failings that needed to be addressed are skills and education; lack of infrastructure; lack of original content; high cost; creative destruction; weak country branding/positioning; skills and lack of data; counterfeiting and piracy; ease of doing business; low levels of clustering; and sensitive to natural and political environment.
Despite the mentioned prospects and downside risks of the creative poll, the Economic Performance of the Philippine Creative Industry made an outstanding rank in Asean when in 2018, the Philippines secured the first spot in terms of Creative Services Exports.
Meanwhile, in 2021, the Creative Goods and Services trade accounted for 6.57% of the country’s total exports.
There are currently nine creative domains and over 73 creative industries. They span all value chain operations, from the conceptualization of a product or service through delivery to the market and after-sales service, for both creative goods and services, whether tangible or intangible. DEF
