THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced Friday, October 13, 2023, the disqualification of another candidate in the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) after he was found to have been previously dismissed due to an administrative case.

In its decision, the Comelec Second Division disqualified Ireneo Polinar Lapis from running for chairman of Barangay Pualas in Don Carlos, Bukidnon in the October 30 polls.

"For being removed from public office as a result of the Ombudsman's finding that Lapis is guilty in the administrative case against him, Lapis is disqualified from running for any elective public office," said the Comelec Second Division.

In its order dated March 28, 2005, the Ombudsman dismissed Lapis from public service after finding him guilty of dishonesty.

Section 40 (b) of the Local Government Code of 1991 provides that removal from office as a result of an administrative case is one of the grounds for disqualification from running for any elective local position.

Earlier, the Comelec announced the cancellation of the Certificates of Candidacy of Merson C. Calubag, who is running for SK chairperson in Barangay Magtangale, San Francisco, Surigao del Norte; and Ivy Jane Parohinog Miranda, who is running for SK chairperson of Barangay Malag-it, Calinog, Iloilo, as they are part of a political dynasty.

The Comelec also ruled to disqualify Aniano Pancho Capinig as a barangay chairman candidate in Barangay Cabas-an, Aroroy, Masbate due to him having been sentenced to imprisonment of more than 18 months. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
