Folayang eyes 1st global win

EDUARD Folayang will seek his first international mixed martial arts title when he steps inside the cage for the ESPN Martial Combat at the Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore on July 14.

Taking the international MMA arena by storm, Folayang, one of the stalwarts of Baguio's Team Lakay Wushu will gun for his eighth win against Mongolian Bao She Ri Gu Leng in the main event of the night for the Superfight Lightweight title.

With almost six months after his first defeat in MMA against Saipan fighter John Tuck, Folayang went to rack up two more victories to cement his legacy as the country's pound-for-pound mix martial artist. He is currently the welterweight champion in the Universal Reality Combat Championship.

"Right now our game plan is fight him standing up and have more striking [skills] but we'll also plan of taking him to the ground," said Folayang, an education graduate.

The 26-year-old Folayang made his first Martial Combat debut almost three weeks ago, defeating Slovakian fighter Egon Racz via guillotine choke early in the first round.

Touted as the best MMA fighter in the Philippines today, is still a member of the Philippine Wushu team where he is set to compete in the 2010 Asian Games in the wushu sanshou event this coming November.

So far, Folayang has been paving the way for Filipino MMA fighters in the international scene and has been successful in this endeavor for the past 2 years fighting in Guam, Saipan and this time around in Singapore.

Resorts World Sentosa Martial Combat is the only MMA event officially recognized and sanctioned by two of the world's leading governing bodies in the mixed martial arts scene - the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Federation and the World Martial Arts Federation of Singapore.

The bout is also a tie-up of URCC in the hope of bringing Filipino fighters to the international MMA scene.

Folayang is also being asked to join the elite Ultimate Fighting Championship with URCC founder and president Alvin Aguilar eyeing more stints for the Baguio-based fighter in the international arena.
