Suicide bomber kills soldier in Pakistan (12:52 p.m.)

MINGORA, Pakistan -- Security officials said a suicide car bomber detonated his explosives at the gate of a paramilitary base in northwestern Pakistan, killing one soldier.

Major Suleman Khan, a spokesman for the paramilitary Frontier Corps, said the bomber tried to force his way onto the base before dawn Monday by shooting at troops and policemen guarding the gate.

Khan said the bomber detonated his explosives after realizing he couldn't penetrate the base in Lower Dir district near the Afghan border.

Police officer Raffat Ali said the explosion killed one soldier and wounded 12 others, including 10 troops and two policemen. Two civilians in a nearby neighborhood were also injured by retaliatory fire from the troops and policemen trying to repel the suicide bomber. (AP)
