City leads nutrition awareness program

ANGELES CITY -- The City Government here, led by Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, called Monday local stakeholders to join in the awareness program of the city in line with the national celebration of the Nutrition Month.

Pamintuan, during the start of the month-long activities here, said that the city has lined up activities promoting better baby nutrition, good health and wholesome social activities under the theme "Sa Pagkaing Tama at Sapat, Wastong Timbang ni Baby ang Katapat."

The event started with a float parade participated by Daycare Students in different barangays of the city. Each participating daycare school presented nutrition themes as daycare students waved from floats decorated by vegetables and fruits.

"A healthy community is the foundation of a healthy city. A healthy city will surely be able to achieve great things through its citizens. It is necessary that we start with the nutrition of our young generation," Pamintuan said.

Heide Patio, City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) chief, said that the activity is focused on children's well being through proper nutrition and health services with feeding program, integration of nutrition concepts in teaching, float parade and motorcade, distribution of vegetable seeds and fruit bearing trees, lectures, symposium, poster-making contest in schools, livelihood training and nutrition education for daycare centers to various sectors of the city.

The launching was followed by the simultaneous lectures on good nutrition to barangays.

For the culminating activity, the Department of Education will be hosting the Nutri-Jingle contest on July 30 that will be participated by different public and private schools, elementary and high school levels.

The yearly celebration is mandated by Section 7 of Presidential Decree 491 or Nutrition Act, which states that "the month of July shall be designated as nutrition month for the purpose of creating awareness among our people on the importance of nutrition activities shall be coordinated by the National Nutrition Council and the local governments."

"This event will serve as a reminder to our people that a healthy citizenry is the backbone of a healthy community and nation. We are one with the country in celebrating the nutrition month. Let us be reminded that this is not only for this month alone but rather yearlong events to highlight the importance of good nutrition," Pamintuan said.
