Alcantara: The Shrine Hills Challenge

THE sun was up earlier than most of us would on a lazy Sunday daybreak. Braving the morning chill and the thought of running 10 kilometers, 5 kilometers, or only 3 kilometers is even braver. The Mindset of leaving the bed earlier on a Sunday morning is unusual but you have to, why? And you realize that it's the 27th of June, the day of the Pocari Sweat Shrine Hills Challenge.

The Davao Sunday Runners Club organized the Pocari Sweat Shrine Hills Challenge, which assembled at Jack's Ridge Resort & Restaurant. The run started with the ceremonial National Anthem, invocation and welcome remarks by Davao Sunday Runners Club President, Dr. Oscar Escudero.

MetroLifestyle Fitness Center & Spa incorporated its monthly fun run to Pocari Sweat shrine Hills Challenge in support of the Davao Sunday Runners Club. Both organizations are united in its aim to inspire other fitness enthusiasts, professionals and homebodies likewise to take up running for fitness, camaraderie, and sharing our blessings to the community.

Fitness instructors Nell Jone Astudillo, Dolly Chuim, Joy Olimba, and Ivy Herrero of MetroLifestyle led the warm up exercises before the fun run formally started.

The 5K and 3K both have an out-and-back course along Matina Shrine Hills, while the 10k route map indicated going to Maa Diversion Road, turn left to Matina Pangi Road passing through Bangkal, then up to McArthur Highway, followed by an uphill climb at Virgo St. To Pluto St. Of GSIS Village to Shrine Hills, and to the finish line at Jack's Ridge.

Counting 171 participants from MetroLifestyle Fitness Center & Spa alone, the fun run delegates totaled 1,200 in all! This 9thannual running event gathered the most number of avid fitness enthusiasts composed of businessmen, professionals, students and athletes from different companies, colleges and organizations.

Stay at home moms and their children in town also joined in the run.

For only P200 registration fee, each participant received a blue and white singlet or shirt, race bibs, Pocari Sweat energy drink, a breakfast pack and hot lugaw.

Not only that, those who registered through MetroLifestyle Fitness Center & Spa, also helped raise funds for the monthly feeding program for the benefit of Rescue-A-Child Foundation in Bucana area.

An upcoming fun run will be held on July 25, 2010 which marks the 8th anniversary of PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency) titled "Takbo Laban Sa Droga." Interested parties may register at MetroLifestyle for P150 only which includes token shirt and morning snacks.

Run to win, not only for a prize but for humanity.
