Feeding program for malnourished pupils underway

FEEDING program for Barangay Bulua's malnourished pupils is underway as the country observes the Nutrition month since July 1.

With the full support of Bulua Barangay Council, Bulua Central School is now closely monitoring children who are under nourished especially those in Grade I and Grade II levels.

"We're going to weigh them all and those found to be malnourished will be subjected in our weekly feeding program. They'll be provided with porridge or lugaw and a lot of vegetables in the said program will be subsidized by our canteen funds," said Gemma B. Ong, assistant principal of Bulua Elementary School.

However, Ong told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that not all of the 3,672 pupils at the school can avail of the feeding program, because of luck of funds.

"That's why we're hoping that sponsors will come to the rescue so as to sustain the program whole-year-round," said Ong, even as she was grateful to Bulua Barangay Council under Barangay Chairman Al Legaspi for making the program works.

Legaspi said organizers of the feeding program with the help of local health experts wrote a letter asking help from every establishment in the area to do their share.

Julie's bakeshop, Legaspi said, is among those who responded to the challenge by sponsoring 500 pieces of pandesal laced with malunggay.

"For the good of the children, we gladly come to help," said Sol Ira, proprietor of Julie's Bakeshop Bulua Branch, adding that the mixture of pandesal with malunggay was due to the rich health benefits it contains. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
