Former city lawyer dies of heart attack

FORMER City Hall lawyer Joy Elumba succumbed to a heart attack Monday morning at the Polymedic Medical Plaza in Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City.

He was 56 years old.

Elumba is survived by his wife Rose and children JR, 23; RJoy, 21; and Sweet Ross, 20.

Rose said Joy was a family man, a loving husband and a close friend to his three children.

Elumba took up Criminology at the Cagayan de Oro College in 1978 and studied Law at Xavier University. He graduated in 1982 and passed the bar a year after. He then worked at the Bureau of Post and later became active at the City Government during the time of then Mayor Aquilino Pimentel Jr. as assistant legal counsel.

During the start of the term of then Mayor Pablo Magtajas in 1983, Elumba became the city legal counsel at City Hall and continued working when Mayor Vicente Y. Emano was first elected in 1998.

During his term as legal counsel, Elumba has done great achievements and won cases for the city. He even became a model employee of the City Government.

After two months of Emano’s term, he resigned as legal counsel and continued to practice his field as a private lawyer at the same time focused more on providing the needs of his family and children.

“All I can say is that my husband is perfect in my eyes, a good father, a good mentor and a good defender to the oppressed,” Rose said.

Elumba’s body now lies at the Divine Shepherd Memorial Chapels. Interment is scheduled at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday at the Divine Shepherd Memorial Garden in Barangay Bulua, this city. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
