Education chief befriends media

AFTER getting the ire of media, Education Secretary Armin Luistro made a "peace" offering to beat reporters covering the education sector and invited them to a meeting-cum press conference on Friday, July 9.

"The new DepEd (Department of Education) secretary will spend a light moment introducing himself and getting to know the reporters," declared an advisory issued Wednesday afternoon by the DepEd Communication Unit.

The meeting will be held at 10am at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan at the DepEd Complex along Meralco Avenue in Pasig City.

Earlier, Luistro apologized to the media and the DepEd employees for his statement calling them as "nuisance" during last week's turnover of the DepEd post from his predecessor, Mona Valisno.

Saying it was a "baptism of fire" for him, Luistro told the media and assembled employees of the DepEd during Monday's flag-raising ceremony to give him more time to know the ropes of his new job.

On Tuesday, Luistro was the first among the Cabinet secretaries of the Aquino administration to attend a seminar on media relations and awareness. The President himself mandated the seminar for Cabinet secretaries following several run-in with the media covering their respective beats.

DepEd beat reporters lambasted Luistro after he brushed aside a question regarding the implementation of the controversial issue of sex education during the turn-over ceremony last week. (AH/Sunnex)
