Serna: Imax movies to the max

ALTHOUGH the first half of the year has not been wanting of big events in the entertainment scene, the second half promises to be busier and more loaded with big to-dos.

Here’s a mind-twister of sorts: Only in the second week of the first month of the second half—hey, let me decode my little joke: second week of July, which starts the second half of the year—a number of events have already been lined up for fun lovers to lap up and enjoy.

First of these is the opening of the first Imax Theatre in the Vis-Min area today (and the third one in the country, two of which are in the Mall of Asia and SM North) right at SM City Cebu.

The Imax Theatre boasts of a digital projection system that delivers crystal-clear images, powerful audio system, which delivers laser-aligned digital sound and customized theatre technology, thus making Imax 3D viewing the most immersive cinematic experience that makes the viewer “in the movie.”

Last week, together with many friends in the media, I had a first-hand experience with the Imax 3D technology when we viewed the movie Under The Sea, which amazed and made me admire more the beauty of the underwater world and the marine life that inhabit it.

One scene showed sea snakes moving toward the audience and appeared as it they were moving right into our faces. This resulted in the ladies shouting in mock fear and anticipation.

In today’s theater opening, the SM Cinema management is bringing back the monster hit Avatar. If you enjoyed its ordinary version, the more you will enjoy it in the Imax environment. Also in the line-up are Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio, Hubble, Legend of the Guardians (the one with the talking owls as characters), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore, Piranha, Mega Mind, Chronicles of Narnia 3 and Tron Legacy, among others. Keep posted.

Another entertainment package that’s coming our way is the “Naay Nag-Text–Vice Ganda Naa Na Sa Cebu” concert of the comedian-turned-TV-host Vice Ganda.

It is scheduled tomorrow, July 10, at the Pacific grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino starting at 8:30 p.m. Promo materials say that segment of the show is the spoof on the top-rating TV show Agua Bendita with Vice and special guest Gladys Reyes delineating the roles of the twin sisters.

Agua Bendita leading man Matteo Guidicelli is also appearing on the show. He’s expected to render two songs. Other guests include Jaya and Troy Montero.

Be in the venue on time so the show can also start early.

A dinner-concert for a cause is also scheduled at the SM City Trade Hall on July 23. This is a project of the Youth Ministry Keepsake Association Inc. As I understand it, the main performer is The Singing Clergy Quartet. More of this next time.

The pop star princess’ hit concert series in the US will come to Cebu at the end of July. Sarah Geronimo’s “Record Breaker Philippine Tour 2010 Live In Cebu” will be held at the Pacific grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino on July 30. Eric Santos, Charlie Green (he’s a teener now and a looker at that), Jimmy Marquez and the G-Force are the show’s guests. Again, keep posted.

While the camp of James Yap says the basketball star is leaving no stones unturned in his effort to win back Kris Aquino and save their marriage, President Aquino’s younger sister says saving the marriage is now a tall order for James. Could it be due to the scuttlebutts that Kris has found another man? That soon? “And why not?,” her loyal followers might chorus. OMG!

I still have to watch the new television sitcom of Ai-ai delas Alas and Aga Muhlach entitled M3 (Malay Mo Ma-develop), but basing on the trailer and the teasers, I can imagine myself having a good time every weekend. I hope the show lives up to my expectations.
