Hontiveros optimistic on FOI bill revival

AKBAYAN Representative Risa Baraquel-Hontiveros is optimistic that the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill will get the full backing of President Benigno Aquino III.

Hontiveros said majority of her colleagues are also hopeful that Aquino will transmit to Congress his support for the immediate passage of the bill.

Gracing the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) forum recently, Hontiveros said the information bill is her top-most priority in seeking audience from the Aquino administration.

"I believe that Aquino in all honesty, is trying his best to make this nation a better place to live, and he will look upon the welfare of his people, as his well-verse speech suggests 'walang mahirap kung walang corrupt,'" Hontiveros said.

The FOI bill hopes to provide guaranteed access to data held by the state and to establish the legal process by which requests may be made for government-held information.

Under the bill, government agencies shall make available to the public for scrutiny, copying and reproduction all information pertaining to official acts, transactions of decisions as well as government research data used as basis for policy development.

"The Aquino administration has so many things in line for the improvement of our country. Just give him (the President) ample time to find a solution to our problems step at a time," the legislator said. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
