THE military and US Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P) will dispose thousands of ammunition to remove potentially hazardous items from its stockpile.
Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) Chief Benjamin Mohammad Dolorfino said the disposal of the ammunition is set to be held Saturday at a mining area in the town of Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte.
Dolorfino said more than 2,000 mortars and 15,000 small arms ammunition will be dispose by the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians from the 3rd EOD detachment, Naval Special Operations Unit (NAVSOU) 6 EOD technicians, and sailors from JSOTF-P.
The military official said the destruction of the unused and unserviceable ordnance and ammunition will deny lawless groups of resources necessary for manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) citing "these items are common parts of IEDs that have been used throughout the Mindanao and Sulu Archipelago."
He said the day-long disposal will eliminate hazardous objects and possible materials that could possibly be used against soldiers and police as well as the civilians.
Dolorfino invited the members of the media, who wish to cover the activity, to witness the disposal of the unusable ammunitions. (Bong Garcia)
