6 hurt in Malabon explosion (1:15 p.m.)

MANILA -- Six persons were wounded after a tank containing ammonia exploded at CO2 building in Governor A. Pascual Avenue, Potrero, Malabon City, early Saturday.

Initial reports said the victims identified as Rene Sanenya, Daniel Anob, Mario Abay, Lolito Saycon, Elmer Blanca, and Oscar Palacio Mondes were working inside the building owned by Globe Paper Mills when the explosion occurred.

The victims, who sustained first and second degree burns on different parts of their bodies, were rushed to Malabon City Hospital, radio dzBB reported.

Abay was already discharged and reportedly returned to the area, while the five other victims are still being treated at the hospital.

Senior Superintendent Roberto Villanueva of Malabon City Police told dzBB that he already asked members of the City Health Office to conduct examination on the area as the chemical contained in the tank might affect the people living nearby.

The police also asked the owner of the building to cooperate in the investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. (Sunnex)
