VEHICLE registration in Northern Mindanao has increased by 8.41 percent in the first quarter of 2010, records from the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) in Region X show.

A total of 53,921 vehicles registered at the Land Transportation Office in Region X ((LTO-X) LTO-X in the past three months of 2010 alone, compared to 49,739 during the period last year.

The increase meant a positive performance for LTO-X and could be mainly attributed to to the increase in the number of registration for private vehicles, including renewals, said NEDA-X Assistant Director Cecilio Y. Clarete. He added that the increase offsets the declining number of registration for government, for hire and tax exempted vehicles.

Private vehicles posted an increase of 23.47 percent for new registration from first quarter record of 7,472 in 2009 to 9,226 the same period this year, while renewal went up by 7.81 percent from 35,475 registrations.

For hire vehicles registered an unfavorable 71.73 percent decrease for new registration, or from 191 to only 54, while the number of renewals slightly went down by 2.39 percent or 5,628 this year from 5,766 last year.

Government vehicle registration also shrunk by 41.67 percent or from 48 to 28, while renewal is down by 6.12 percent or from 784 to 736.

Clarete said revenue collections of the LTO-X for its frontline services registered a 5.88 percent increase during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year of only P98.60 million against this year's P104.398 million.

"The increase in revenue collections was attributed mainly to the higher number of motor vehicles registered posting 8.41 percent; registration transactions handled with 13.30 percent and a 1.35 percent for issued licenses and permits," Clarete said.

Clarete further said that other frontline services of LTO on licenses and permits issued (7.78%), licenses/transactions handled (6.88%) and apprehensions (12.42%) posted decreased during the third quarter of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008.
