Runner dies after going amok

A PARTICIPANT in a running competition in Mandaue City Saturday evening died after he jumped off from the Mandaue City District Hospital’s window.

A hospital nurse said the loss of blood from a cut in the left arm, and not the impact of the fall, killed Alexander Landera, a

member of the Danao City Runners Club.

A police investigation report said Landera collapsed along the race route during the Energizer Night Run that started at the Mandaue Reclamation Area.

He was taken by Acert paramedics to the Mandaue City District Hospital but was allegedly left outside the hospital’s entrance.

Insp. Zosimo Jabas of the Mandaue City Police Office said when the hospital staff were about to carry Landera to the emergency room, he suddenly stood up and ran inside the hospital.

He ran past the emergency room and rammed the glass door of the delivery room.

He then proceeded to the adjacent recovery room where he took the table of the suction machine, climbed on it and jumped out of the window.

The incident happened at 11:26 p.m. or almost an hour after Landera was brought by paramedics to the hospital.

The hospital personnel called up the police to seek assistance.

“Kusog kaayo siyang nidagan. Wala mi makaapas niya. Unya wala siya’y klaro nga direksyon kay gidasmagan niya ang among pultahan nga bildo (He ran so fast to different directions. We couldn’t catch up with him),” said a nurse, who

requested anonymity.

Wounded

The nurse said they suspect Landera got wounded in the left arm when he rammed the glass door of the delivery room.

The Energizer Night Run drew 2,500 participants, competing in the 3K, 5K and 10K categories for a prize of P10,000.

Manila-based actors and actresses joined the activity since a portion of the P350-registration fee went to the Kapuso Foundation of GMA 7. The TV network raised funds for hearing-impaired indigents.

The nurse said after Landera jumped out of the window, they ran to the hospital’s garden where he fell.

“He was unconscious when we carried him to the emergency room.
