TWO Baguio arnis officiating were recently conferred as International Referees and Judges by the Arnis Pederasyong International, Inc. and World Martial Arts Union in a workshop.

This came after a five-day seminar attended by coaches, trainers, instructors, academic and other line agencies for the new arnis international rules introduced to participants by Arnis Philippines president Raymond S. Velayo and Arnis Referees and Judges Association of the Philippines president Benjie Mojica.

The Baguio delegates who were given international referee and judges status were Leo Cariño of Saint Louis University and Rodini Buyogan, arnis coah of the University of the Cordilleras.

The seminar is the first in a series for International Arnis referees and judges accreditation conducted in the Philippines and will re-echoed to Baguio Arnis enthusiasts after setting a schedule with the Baguio Arnis Federation.

Coinciding with the seminar was the National Selection for the Arnis Philippine Team. Baguio City was represented by participants from the Philippine Military Academy cadets and the YMCA Sphinx Martial Arts represented by lone arnisadore Shayne Alejos, a product of the YMCA Summer Frolics Sports Program who made it to the Philippine Team by winning a gold medal in Light weight division sparing (labanan).

Alejos will be representing Baguio City in the forthcoming International Arnis Invitational Tournament set on July 14-16 at the Mall of Asia. Cariño and Buyogan will also be representing the city as officiating officials for the international tournament. (Roderick Osis with reports from Bobby Vinluan)
