Arroyo allies back Charter change revival

MEMBERS of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD at the House of Representatives supported the call of Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (second district, Pampanga) for the amendments of the 1987 Constitution.

Arroyo earlier filed House Resolution 8 to jumpstart the process of Charter change.

Representative Danilo Suarez (third district, Quezon) said he will definitely back the measure because he is in favor of amending certain provisions in the Constitution.

“I am amenable to change certain provisions in the Constitution because some needs to be analyzed especially in the proposed acquisition of real property of foreign individuals and corporations here,” Suarez said.

Representative Simeon Datumanong (second district, Maguindanao) has been pushing for constitutional changes since 1993 in order to clarify many confusing provisions.

For his part, Representative Elpidio Barzaga Jr. (second district, Cavite) is planning to file a similar bill calling for a constitutional convention.

“I personally believed that there is really a need to take a look at the 1987 Constitution. During the 14th Congress, the opposition is saying that any Charter change should be made after GMA’s term,” said Barzaga.

The Liberal Party (LP), which will be the majority party in Congress, has not tackled their official position on the matter yet. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
