Minors' involvement in crimes worries police chief

BACOLOD City Police Officer-in-Charge Senior Superintendent Celestino Guara expressed Tuesday his worries on rampant crime incidents that involved several minors in the city.

The city police office's records showed that some of the suspects involved in crime incidents were minors, but police authority cannot act on it since they are minors.

Guara said some minors are being used by victims of crime incidents for revenge.

He said the police authorities don't have the right to arrest minors and put them in jail, as Republic Act 9344 states that no minors should be kept in jails or lock-up cells.

"If there would any politicians that will sponsor the bill punishing parents for negligence of their child, maybe it will not happen in our society," Guara said.

He cited that the country is not yet ready to assume the responsibility for minors, as the government doesn't have enough funds for it. (MAP)
