City to toughen disaster council

AS TYPHOONS are expected to reach Philippine shores, a city official said the government plans to strengthen the capacity of the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) in responding to calamities.

"The CDCC is badly in need of additional personnel and equipment," said newly confirmed City Administrator Carlos Canilao.

Canilao said preparing the CDCC is in fact on the top of his list as soon as he seats as administrator.

Canilao said for a response team to be effective more people should be added but at present the office only have six regular employees and the rest are volunteers.

"Volunteers, come and go," Canilao said.

He said rescue equipment, vehicles and protective gear for rescuers are also lacking.

Canilao said he would make sure that the team is well-equipped.(Rimaliza Opiña)
